Tom Mboya University has established an Institutional Scientific and Ethics Review Committee known as the Tom Mboya University Scientific and Ethics Review Committee (TMU-SERC). The primary role of TMU-SERC is to protect the rights, safety, and well-being of all human participants in research and to ensure that animals used in research are treated humanely.
In a significant milestone for the University's research infrastructure, TMU-SERC was formally instituted following a comprehensive training and sensitization workshop conducted on 3rd and 4th March 2026. This event marked the transition of the Committee into a fully operational body ready to facilitate high-level research.
TMU-SERC operates under the regulatory oversight of the National Commission for Science, Technology, and Innovation (NACOSTI). The Committee is composed of ten (10) members drawn from diverse academic and professional disciplines, ensuring independence and objectivity in all review processes.
The committee operates independently from research sponsors and investigators to provide objective, impartial review of research protocols, maintaining the highest standards of ethical oversight.
The TMU-SERC comprises distinguished scholars and professionals from diverse fields, bringing a wealth of expertise to the ethical review process. Our committee reflects Kenya's rich regional diversity with members from Meru, Luhya, Luo, Kalenjin, Kuria, and other communities.
TMU-SERC actively engages with the research community through workshops, training sessions, and collaborative reviews.
The committee meets regularly to review research protocols, provide guidance to researchers, and ensure that all research conducted under the auspices of Tom Mboya University meets the highest ethical standards. Members serve staggered terms to ensure continuity while bringing fresh perspectives to the committee's work.
For any inquiries regarding the committee or the ethical review process, please contact the secretariat through the chairperson or any committee member.
